Propane was first discovered as an energy source over 100 years ago in Pennsylvania. It all began when a gifted scientist named Walter Snelling became interested in the byproducts of gasoline and discovered how to harness these lighter end hydrocarbons (meaning, gas vapors), such as propane. From its humble beginnings as a source of providing light, propane has since grown into a global source of clean energy that today is serving more than 44 million US families as well as commercial and industrial businesses.
Propane is a liquid stored under pressure in tanks and cylinders. In most systems, propane is vaporized to a gas before it leaves the tank or cylinder and then is dispensed through a pressure regulator to your appliance.
In its natural state, propane is an odorless, colorless gas. For safety reasons, a non-toxic odorant is added to give propane its distinctive smell. Used and handled properly, propane is a safe and economical fuel.
Penn Valley delivery and service personnel are trained and certified in the proper handling of propane. We are a member of the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) and Pennsylvania Propane Gas Association (PAPGA). Our high safety standards go beyond national and industry requirements.
Propane is safe and nonpolluting, which is why the EPA considers it to be a “solution to pollution”. Propane minimizes harmful emissions by as much as half of those created by generating electricity using coal or fuel oil. Since propane is insoluble in water and nontoxic it presents minimal risk to soil and ground water supplies. For these reasons and more you can help preserve the environment for future generations by choosing propane as your energy source.
